Silhouette Pillows

I’ve been teaching a class in garment construction at a community art center here in Chicago for the last year. Each week I’ll demonstrate a different technique and, occasionally, I find people need a break from the intense patterning and picky sewing. So I was showing them how to use the heat and bond fusible for making appliques as well as making really inexpensive pillows.

I’ve always been a fan of shadow portraits. My mother always did them when we were kids. We’d sit in the basement next to a lamp and she’d trace it onto black paper. When it came time to make our wedding invitations, I made portraits of Zach and I for the front. Of course now I just traced our photos in Illustrator, so it’s a little less romantic and nostalgic. I used those same Illustrator files to make appliques for my class demonstration and included the whole family i.e. Yohji, our dog and Papoo, one of our hens.
